Millsberry

Probably anyone who reads this has never even heard of Millsberry. It was an online game sponsored and run by General Mills cereal, mostly as an advertising gimmick. You would sign up, create and dress up a character, then go around a whole town of shops, arcades, et cetera.

My brother and I used to play this game a lot, mostly for the arcade mini games. We would constantly be fighting for the high score. My personal favorite game was the skiing one, Slalom..something. It was really fun!

My favorite part in the entire game, though, was decorating your house. You could add furniture, buy pets
(<3) and show off your house to other Millberry "citizens" if you unlocked your house, or became friends with a person who wanted to see it. I thought my house was pretty cool.

Mutt and I grew out of the game, and never really had the time for it anymore, so we didn't go on it anymore.  Not that it matters anymore. Millsberry is gone. It closed yesterday, or something, and it's just...gone. They apparently announced it was shutting down last winter, but I haven't been on Millsberry in AGES. I didn't know until a friend of mine mentioned it on a social website I use...

Why are all the websites I like shutting down? First it was Virtual Magic Kingdom (long story), then World of Cars Online, then Barbie Girls, now Millsberry. What's next?

Sure, Millsberry wasn't a very interactive or exciting game, but it was fun and part of my childhood. And now it's just gone? Because of what, you might ask? Toucan Sam.

Yes, they shut down Millsberry because General Mills' characters are making kids biased on wanting cereal, and making them ask their parents to buy it for them. Millsberry was basically nothing BUT Toucan Sam, Lucky Leprachan (I think I misspelled that), CooCoo the Cocoa Puffs Bird, Chef Cinnamon, etc. It sounds as if they're getting pulled. Hasn't that been the gimmick all along? Colorful character= kids want the cereal= parents buy the cereal for the kids. General Mills is blaming the characters, not the parents who don't decide for themselves whether or not to buy their kids the sugary cereal.

I played this game for years. Did it make me want the cereal more? Overall, no. Of course, there were times when I really wanted Cinnamon Toast Crunch, because of this one arcade game, but I got over it.

Well, farewell, Millsberry, you were a fun game, and will be sorely missed.

We really loved the random items you could buy like the 3 legged table and the first chicken... it was cool to be able to gift people with items as well... it was the safest interactive game ever, and fun for ALL AGES ... BRING IT BACK!!!

  12. This game was my childhood, I used to play it with my brother and 2 sisters. I remember us fighting for the computer to play Millsberry. I'm 18 now but a good few years my grade school life was spent playing this game. The best part about this game is its innocence. It's probably the best game I've ever played in terms of allowing me to have fun, be creative and be social all while maintaining good values.

RIP Millsberry, you will be missed.

  13. I was just googling millsberry to see if it was still around, and I was sadly disappointed. It's good to know others had fond childhood memories just as I did.

  14. Ah, how depressing. Yeah, I'm nearing the ripe old age of 21 and I adored this game as a child. I wanted to reminisce about old times but have to settle for pictures... As another commenter mentioned, the best part was that it was fun, creative, safe AND innocent... I would have loved to have my own children play this some day... Oh well, new games will be around then I'm sure.

  16. I suppose I should add my own disappointment in the shutting down of such of fantastic game. It was introduced to us through an after school program when I was in 5th grade. It was either that or Math4Kids and since (at the time) I hated math, I said wha the heck. ANd instantly became obsessed with it. It taught me to "live" like a responsible adult, even though I hadn't realized it at the time. That was 10 years ago. A full decade and I decided that maybe I (I am a big kid at heart) and my niece who was way advanced for her 5 years of age to get into this. Unfortunately not....I have seen a plethora of petitions and I have signed some but I don't think there has been enough pushback from fans. The small percentage of us that do remember have come back after a hiatus. So more than likely the fan base that kept Millsberry going are still on hiatus. I would really love for this to kick back up....I guess Ill have to wait in see. #nostalgia is a bitch!

  19. It's a shame General Mills shut the site down. I'm eighteen and I had probably started playing on the site when I was about seven years old. I've actually kept the same username since then in memory of it. That's eleven years now. Haha. But yeah, Millsberry was really a go-to site for me when I needed some entertainment in my day. I admit I somewhat quit just for a little while but it was only for a break. I was big with most of the Millsberry forums out there and all of the websites basically shut down when Millsberry was gone. It does truly suck. My hope is that one day General Mills will realize there's still a massive fanbase out there and bring the site back. You'd think they would've at least published the arcade out there somewhere, but sadly no. They'll forever be greedy for money. I don't think the site closed because they wanted to retire it already. I think they were just tired of getting no money off of the website.

  32. Perhaps Millsberry was shut down 'cause not enough people were playing it at some point? (I wouldn't know) Or maybe because the creators felt that Adobe/Shockwave is outdated? (If it was powered by Shockwave/Adobe, that is, more than likely)

I remember watching a commercial about Millsberry as a kid, but I wasn't interested in playing it, and I was too obsessed with other games.

But after seeing the images online, it looks really cool in retrospect. It looks much better than most modern-day games and avatar makers. They just don't make 'em like they used to in the 90's & 00's...

Everything's too 3D now, and I really like that genuine, cartoony, 2D art style because it makes me feel nostalgic for a simpler time.

Millsberry sounds like the equivalent of Club Penguin. If it were somehow brought back, then that would be great, so I could at least play the game for myself and see what all the hype's about.
